Sclerotherapy Benefits: Is It Worth It?

Sclerotherapy Benefits: Is It Worth It?

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for spider veins. It is affordable, low risk, and causes minimal discomfort to the patient. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into your veins with a very fine needle, irritating the blood vessel lining. This irritation causes the veins to scar and collapse, eventually to be reabsorbed by the body.

SCLEROTHERAPY IS LOW RISK

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure. No anesthesia is required and you can resume normal activities right after treatment. The procedure is slightly uncomfortable; you may feel some mild itching and burning during the injections. Side effects are also minimal including bruising, raised red areas, itching, or darkened skin near the injection sites, and they usually go away within a couple weeks (sometimes lasting only a couple days).

SCLEROTHERAPY IS EASY

Sclerotherapy generally takes less than 60 minutes. It is simple procedure that can be done right in the doctor’s office. There is no preparation for the treatment, though your doctor may recommend abstaining from certain medications for a day or two before the visit (ex. Ibuprofen). Once the procedure is complete, you will need to wear compression wraps or stockings for two weeks; but otherwise, can get right back to living your life and doing the things you love.

RESULTS

Each sclerotherapy treatment works to fade the majority of your spider veins, improving the look of your skin. The treatment is permanent, though it doesn’t prevent new spider veins from appearing. The hardest part about sclerotherapy is the wait, as it may take a few weeks for the results to appear—or disappear. This is because it takes time for the closed veins to scar and be reabsorbed by your body. It may take multiple treatments to obtain the best outcome, but is well worth the result.
