Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and perforating veins not visible from the surface of the skin. These veins are not working properly, and by closing them down, blood flow can be routed to healthy veins, which will decrease a patient’s leg symptoms.

Who should consider ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy?

Patients with superficial venous reflux disease, found on ultrasound, can be treated with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, including patients who have previously undergone vein stripping or other vein procedures. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is often performed in conjunction with venous ablation and/or ambulatory phlebectomy in order to thoroughly treat this complex condition.

What can I expect during the procedure?

Your legs will be evaluated using ultrasound, and the affected veins to be treated will be identified. Local anesthesia will be given at the injection site. The physician will access the veins with a small needle, and the sclerosing medication will be injected into the veins to close the veins down. Some patients experience mild itching or burning for a few seconds when the medication is injected. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, though your entire appointment may take 1-2 hours.

What happens after the procedure?

For this procedure, no special preparation is needed. You should not shave or apply lotion to your legs on the day of your procedure. Patients may resume normal activities the same day, although strenuous activity or standing for prolonged periods should be avoided for two weeks. Compression stockings are worn for 2 weeks after the procedure. Some tenderness and bruising can be experienced for a few weeks. A follow-up ultrasound is performed within 7 days of your procedure.

Does insurance cover this procedure?

Most insurance companies cover ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (which is different from cosmetic sclerotherapy). Our business office
representative can assist you with questions about your health insurance coverage, claim submission, or payment.
